The segment lcd is a simple digital display screen belonging to a flat panel display. The segment lcd displays was the mainstream display product in the 1960s and was first developed in Japan. The technology was introduced to China in the 1980s. In the early days, LCD screens were mainly used to replace LED digital tubes, and the displayed content was mostly numbers and simple graphics. In the LCD industry, small-sized segment code screens are generally called digital display LCD screens to distinguish them from dot matrix LCD screens.

The lcd 7 segment consists of three parts. The first part is two glass substrates with transparent electrode patterns etched on the inside, the second part is the liquid crystal layer located in the middle of the glass substrate, and the third part is the polarizer attached to the outermost side. Some with night vision function will also add backlight sources. When no voltage is applied, the liquid crystal molecules are naturally arranged, which will reverse the polarization direction of the incident light. The light can pass through the polarizer, and the area is displayed as the background color. When a voltage difference is applied to the electrodes of a specific "segment" , According to the logic control display content of the 7-segment LCD display data table .the liquid crystal molecules rearrange themselves under the action of the electric field, tending to be parallel to the direction of the electric field, losing the ability to twist the direction of polarized light, and the light cannot pass through the polarizer. The "segment"  area appears dark, thus forming numbers, characters or icons.  intermittent LCD screens have such structural characteristics, and are widely used in digital display panels for small electronic products.
